I know many of us have visited This Is The Place Heritage Park at one point or another.  But, have you visited during Baby Animal Season?!  Did you know they had a Baby Animal Season?  I didn’t until just recently when a friend of mine posted a picture of her son holding a baby chicken.  I immediately called, asked where she was, and planned a time when I could take my kids.  Baby Animal Season is only April 3 – May 23.  Obviously the baby animals won’t be as little when you go later in the season, but they will still be fun and cute to see.

Where is it located?

2601 E. Sunnyside Ave. Salt Lake City, UT

If you know where Hogle Zoo is, it is located just across the street to the North.  Take I-15 to I-80 heading East.  You will get off at Foothill Drive and head North.  Follow this all the way to Sunnyside Avenue, where you will take a right.  Follow this street East.  If you get to the Zoo you have gone too far.  The entrance is about 1/4 mile west of the entrance to Hogle Zoo.

How much does it cost?

$11/adults, $8/children (3-11) & seniors, Free/children (2 and under)

Is food allowed?

Yes! You are able to bring in your own food. Of course alcoholic beverages are not permitted.  And, they strongly ask that you do NOT feed any of the animals.

They do have Grill called the Huntsman Grill where they serve food starting at 11 a.m.  There is also a ZCMI Mercantile building where they have candy, soda, toys, etc.

Are strollers allowed?

Yes!  If you have little children I would bring one.  It was great for my 1 year old who doesn’t know how to walk.  However, my 4 year old was not interested in sitting.  I like the convenience of a stroller when I have a diaper bag and food to bring with me.

How close are the bathrooms?

Bathrooms are located by the petting corral which holds all the animals you are able to pet.

Is there a picnic area?

Yes! There is a full picnic area just inside the entrance to the park.  It has a covered pavilion which is great on the hot days.

Are there shaded areas?

Yes! You will be able to find many shaded areas to get out of the sun due to the abundance amount of trees and benches located under them.

What should I expect?

This is a place that has a great history of Pioneers.  There are original buildings, cabins, etc.  In multiple buildings you will find activities the kids can take a part of.

Of course there is the petting corral which is the place kids love to be.  There you will be able ride ponies, pet the animals, and let the kids experience animals that won’t see, or touch, every day.  They do have hand sanitizer available for you, but I find it easier to bring some with me.

They have added an Irrigation Station, which is their type of SPLASH PAD.  It is great on all the warm days when your kids are hot and tired of walking around.

They do have a playground for the children.  It is not a huge playground, but it does have a train they can play on.  It’s perfect for the younger kids that just want to run.

Another great thing they have is a Train.  This train goes around the entire park and has 4 different stops.  You can get on and off wherever you would like.  It reduces the amount of walking you do when you want to go to the farther areas of the park.

Any safety concerns?

As long as you keep your kids with you, and know where they are you should be ok.  The only concern would be if you are with a very large group, or go into a building with a large group.

Overall opinion?

We loved it.  My kids weren’t interested in the history part of it, but older kids would be.  My children loved the animals, the train, and the playground.  It is a great place to spend a few hours and give your kids something different to experience.

Anything else I need to know?

Be prepared to get a little dusty throughout the time you are there.  You will be walking on dirt roads, rocks, and with the animals.  Just make sure you wear shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dusty.  Bring lots of water, and snacks if your children get the munchies like mine do!
